Standardization procedure to provide a unified multi-method elemental compositional dataset, application to ferruginous colouring matters from Namibia

Curation of archaeological materials often leads to carrying out multi-analytical methodologies that combine non-invasive and invasive elemental analyses. Such are analysed with different techniques. It results in the production complementary but apparently non-compatible compositional datasets cannot be easily compared. In present paper, we propose compare acquired on geological ferruginous colouring matters from Namibia analytical techniques (X-Ray Fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), Proton-Induced-X-ray Emission (PIXE), Inductively Coupled Plasma coupled Optical (ICP-OES) Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)). We aim provide a unified dataset about these matters, usually referred as “ochre” archaeology. Analysed samples come three distinct tectonostratigraphic zones surveyed frame rock art research. When compared directly, four obtained measurements appear because inter-equipment variability. However, through simple standardization procedure, demonstrate it is possible unify datasets. This procedure minimizes variability, making inter-zones provenance predominant allowing distinctions according their sole origin. Beyond shedding new light possibility techniques, this paves way for multimodal studies matters.
